R&B artist Angie Stone tragically passed away in a car accident early Saturday morning at the age of 63.

Stone was en route with her band members from Mobile, Alabama, to Atlanta when their van collided with a semi-truck on Interstate 65, approximately five miles south of Montgomery, as reported by local police and her record label.

The van, a Mercedes Benz Sprinter, overturned on the road before crashing into the truck, according to Lt. Jeremy Burkett of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Stone, who was a passenger in the van, was confirmed dead at the scene. Eight other individuals in the van sustained injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for medical attention, Burkett confirmed.

A Grammy-nominated artist, Stone first gained recognition in the 1970s as a member of the female rap group The Sequence. She later enjoyed a successful solo career, with hits like "Wish I Didn't Miss You." She also formed part of the R&B trio Vertical Hold.

Stone’s children, Diamond Stone and Michael Archer, expressed their grief in a statement released through her label, SRG-ILS Group, saying, "Never in a million years did we ever expect to get this horrible news. Our mom is and will always be our everything. We are still trying to process and are completely heartbroken."

The singer had performed at a Mardi Gras event in Mobile, Alabama, on Friday evening, according to the Mobile-Area Mardi Gras Association’s Facebook post.

"Angie's performance at the 2025 Grand Marshal's Ball was absolutely remarkable," the association wrote. "We are deeply saddened by her passing, and our hearts go out to her family and fans."

Fans have been sharing tributes on X (formerly Twitter), remembering her songs such as "Brotha," which celebrated Black men, and the theme song for the TV series Girlfriends. As a member of The Sequence, Stone was involved in producing "Monster Jam," a track that helped define early Southern rap, according to Ebony magazine.

Stone, a three-time Grammy nominee, worked with music icons such as D'Angelo, Prince, and Macy Gray, and also showcased her acting skills in The Hot Chick and on Broadway in Chicago, Ebony noted.
